DIY Adventskalender / DIY Advent calender

Hello everyone
and happy December 2015. I hope you all had a wonderful first day of this special month ;o) Today I would like to share the Advent calender I made for my dear husband with you and not a card. It became a kind of tradition to give each other a self made or self filled Advent calender at the beginning of December. In case you are not familiar with Advent calenders, here is how it goes. Almost every kid in Germany gets one for December 1st every year and it can be filled with little toys, books, sweets or whatever comes to mind. There are always 24 things to open, because we celebrate Christmas on the 24th of December. So you have one little surprise every day until the big day is finally there. In the past it grew more and more popular amongst adults to have an Advent calender as well - and why not? I think we all deserve a little bit of a treat now and then, even when we are considered adults, don't you???  So here is the one I made for this year:

Naturally I cannot tell you, what I put into those little drawers, just this much: some very delicious treats are waiting to be enjoyed by my husband ;o))

It took me around 6 - 8 hours to finish the calender, but that was because I made everything myself and I do not have any dies or files to cut the giant "match boxes". However I know that you can purchase the finished boxes in craft stores and that would cut the time in half I would say.

The drawer on top and also the extra boxes you have seen in the first picture are for those treats that are too big or bulky for the little drawers. Whenever a little drawer is empty, my husband can find his surprise in the top drawer. If that isn't big enough either I will put a tag into the little drawer and a matching tag on a box and then he knows that he is in for a really big treat ;o) I wanted to make this project so that it would work for all different kinds of things and not just chocolates and such. This way I hope to be able to use it over and over again and make the effort I put into it really worth while. Writing this I have to say that my husband's delighted expression when I handed his Advent calender over was well worth it by itself.

For this calender I was inspired by a picture on Pinterest. You can find the link here - unfortunately the post didn't include a tutorial. So if you would like to make a calender as well, let me know in the comments below. If need be I will try to write a quick tutorial and share it with you ;o) I wish you a wonderful Advent time (I hope that this is an accurate term in English as well...) and hope that you will stay healthy during this cold time of the year! (If you happen to live in Australia or somewhere similarly hot, I hope that you won't get sun burned while celebrating Christmas at the beach *grin)
